Functional Medicine Lab Testing:

Organic Acid Test (OAT)

The OAT is a test I use frequently in practice as part of your new patient assessment, however, if you already have an OAT result which you need assistance with interpreting, I can provide interpretation consultation services. Please contact me to enquire further.

Organic Acid Testing is a well established test among functional medicine practitioners, however, it is not recognised as a validated test in mainstream healthcare. It should not be used for the diagnosis of disease and you should never discontinue medication or disregard medical advice because of information that any results contain.

What Is The Organic Acid Test (OAT)?

The OAT is a powerful test used to assess multiple metabolic and biochemical pathways in the body to provide insights into physiological imbalances and nutrient needs. It is an excellent first step in identifying the source of dysfunction by assessing many different areas of physiology, making it invaluable for individuals navigating chronic complex disorders.

Microbiome Status

Assessments for candida, clostridia bacteria, bacterial overgrowth, mould and other fungal elements.

Neuro-transmitters

Markers reflecting dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and adrenaline/noradrenaline status.

Energy Production

Assessments of mitochondrial function, fatty acid oxidation and ketone status.

Nutritional Status

Insights into the sufficiency of essential vitamins, antioxidants, and metabolic pathway co-factors.

Detox

Measures to reflect oxidative stress and antioxidant capacities such as glutathione status.

Organic Acid Test Result Interpretation

As chronic illness rates increase, more patients are taking self-directed routes to unravel their health conundrums through private lab tests such as OAT.

Some results of the OAT are easy to understand. Many are not, and there are numerous complex connections within the results which can guide effective solutions when interpreted correctly by a trained practitioner.

I have undertaken specific training on OAT interpretation with a leading lab group which provides one of the most common OATs available; Mosaic Diagnostics (formerly known as Great Plains).

If you have OAT results that you need assistance with, I offer interpretation only consultations to provide you with professional guidance.

Test interpretation consultations will focus on helping you to understand what your test results show and how that may be impacting your individual circumstance. I cannot offer direct intervention advice from the results without having conducted a full history as a patient with us, however, opportunities to do so further to your consultation will be discussed if it would be appropriate.

How To Order an Organic Acid Test

The OAT is a test that I frequently order and use when working with patients to help them to identify underlying causes for their suboptimal health. It is always important to consider the context and history of an individual instead of solely relying on test results, and so I encourage you to consider becoming a new patient to get a full assessment and tailored recommendation plan by initially scheduling a free discovery call.

However if you do wish to purchase an OAT without an initial assessment, you may do so via the test shop here, including an option for result interpretation:
